In 1947, Andy Dufresne, a talented young banker, sits in his car, drinking whisky, fiddling with a revolver, with the intention of killing his wife and her lover for cheating on him. The court finds him guilty and sentences him to lifetime confinement despite his claim of innocence.
Andy is incarcerated in Shawshank State Prison, where he befriends Red, who is known for being able to smuggle contraband into the prison, and he is frequently harassed by a group called The Sisters.
During a field work, Andy gives captain Hadley advice on an inheritance from his brother, as a result, he is promoted to prison librarian, and other Correctional Officers start to consult him about tax issues.
while watching a movie starring Rita Hayworth, Andy asks Red for her poster. When leaving the theater, he is confronted by The Sisters, who beat him up after he refuses to please them. At night, Bogs returns to his cell and finds captain Hadley waiting for him, Hadley revenges Andy, leaving Bogs paralyzed. Having spent a month in the infirmary, Andy returns to his cell and receives a "welcome back present" from Red: a Rita Hayworth poster.
Warden Norton exploits the prisoners by making them work for public constructions, with Andy helping him laundering the profit by fabricating a phantom. Tommy Williams is put in Shawshank prison for B and E in 1965; he brings hope to Andy by recounting a story which can prove Andy's innocence. Warden Norton refuses to reinvestigate the case and sends Andy to solitary confinement for a month, then tricks Tommy out to the restricted zone and shoot him dead, leaving Andy with no option but to work for him as usual.
After being in solitary for two months, Andy shows signs of suicide: he seems despondent, asking Red to pay a visit to the place where he first met his wife when he gets out, ordering a rope from Haywood. The next morning, Andy is gone, and Norton realizes that he has escaped after discovering a hole behind a poster in his cell.
It turns out that Andy has been planning the escape since the first year he got here. With the small hammer acquired from Red, he spent nineteen years digging a tunnel leading to a sewer, through which, he found himself in the outside world. Wearing a new suit, he withdraws $370,000 from the fabricated figure's account and heads to Mexico before mailing the criminal evidence to the press. Before long, captain Hadley is arrested; warden Norton commits suicide. Red is released on parole after serving 40 years. He visits the place Andy mentioned and finds a letter along with some dollars before heading to Mexico to reunite with Andy.
